Forest School
“Classroom without walls, learning without barriers”

What is a forest school?
At Priory School, we believe that some of the best learning happens outdoors. With 14 acres of beautiful grounds – including orchards, woodland trails, a wildlife pond, and a special campfire area – our children have the perfect setting to explore, discover and grow. Forest School is all about giving children regular time in nature, where they can learn through adventure, play, and hands-on experiences. Each session is child-led, meaning children are encouraged to follow their own interests, try out their ideas, and enjoy the freedom to explore at their own pace. Through activities such as building dens, exploring wildlife, learning to use tools safely, or simply enjoying stories around the fire, children develop confidence, independence, and a real love for the outdoors. They also build key life skills like teamwork, problem-solving, creativity, and resilience – all while having fun. Forest School is not just about learning in the woods – it’s about nurturing curiosity, independence, and a lifelong connection with the natural world.
Where is our forest school?
Our Forest School takes place in a special area of the school grounds, set within our beautiful field and surrounded by trees and the orchard. This peaceful, natural space gives children the freedom to explore and learn in the great outdoors. Most sessions are held around our Fire Circle – a safe and welcoming place for gathering, sharing stories, and enjoying outdoor activities – and in our purpose-built Outdoor Learning Hub, which provides shelter and space for hands-on learning.

What do our children do when they attend forest school?
At Priory School, Forest School is all about giving children the time, space, and freedom to learn through play and exploration in nature. Each session is carefully planned and led by trained Forest School practitioners, but it’s also child-led – meaning children follow their own curiosity and ideas.
Using the SPICES approach, children’s learning and development is supported in lots of different ways:
Social – working together, making friends, sharing ideas, and learning to respect each other.
Physical – climbing, balancing, running, and building strength and coordination through active outdoor play.
Intellectual – problem-solving, using tools safely, discovering wildlife, and learning through hands-on experiences.
Communication – telling stories, sharing discoveries, listening to others, and building confidence in expressing themselves.
Emotional – developing resilience, independence, and confidence while managing risk and celebrating achievements.
Spiritual – connecting with nature, appreciating the outdoors, and developing a sense of wonder about the world. Activities might include building dens, exploring woodland trails, pond dipping, whittling sticks, cooking on the campfire, or simply enjoying quiet time in nature. Whatever the activity, children are gaining skills for life – while having fun outdoors.
