English

The English Department believes that all education should be humane and humanising and that the study of English should be supremely so. Students should be able to use language in speaking and listening, reading and writing effectively and with informed understanding.

By the study and enjoyment of literature a pupil should learn to know and understand her place in the world through other eyes than just their own.

Geography

If you want to go places, go there with Geography at Priory School!
Geography is taught by enthusiastic and experienced geographers and is successful at all levels from KS 3 to A2. In 2007 the GCSE pass rate A*-C was 100%.

Geography aims to bring the outside world into the classroom. People & places shape our everyday lives and we live in a world of ever increasing connections and interactions. The department gives insight and understanding about the world. We want to see students who value their role and responsibility for environmental sustainability and who can give explanations for some of the big questions such as "Why did the Asian Tsunami in 2004 kill so many people?" and "Is global warming anything to do with me?"

Geography provides an exciting and varied curriculum. The range of topics offered covers the more traditional aspects of Geography as well as contemporary topics such as Geography of Crime and Geography in the news. Pupils carry out a range of geographical enquiries inside and outside the classroom. The department is well resourced and incorporates the use of ICT into its schemes of work

History

We believe history is a vital subject for all students of all faiths. History has a unique role to play within the National Curriculum and Priory School. Our ambition is to allow our students to access the curriculum at an appropriate level and to gain an understanding of a variety of relevant and exciting topics. Students use critical thinking to foster enquiring and creative minds. They will develop analytical skills, giving them the ability to make judgements, give rational explanations and become independent and reflective learners.

The Department prides itself on making the subject come alive outside the classroom.  There have been almost 30 study visits outside the department in ther last 3 years.  We are also proud of our excellent examination results

100% A* - C at GCSE and 100% A - E at A Level.

Modern foreign languages

Since 70% of British Companies do business abroad it follows that language skills will give you head start.

Studying a language also makes you a good communicator. It develops your flexibility, maturity and independence and gives you a knowledge of other cultures.

At Priory, from Year 7, all students study both French and Spanish. At KS4 they can choose to continue with either or both languages. We also offer both languages at KS5.

The MFL department prides itself in making the language come alive in the classroom: we use the target language as a media of communication and learn through interactive and engaging activities.

Our aim is to equip your child for their future in a multi-lingual Europe and a global business economy.

Religious Education

At Priory School religion is not seen simply as an aspect of life.  Rather we believe that religion is life, and that everything we say and do should reflect this.  All of the pupils, therefore, attending RE lessons are taught the same universal message of love and concern for others, while at the same time being encouraged to bear witness to this message in all areas of their school life though the channels of their faith.  During the school year the department coordinates a range of activities to raise pupil’s awareness of the needs of people at home and abroad.
