Religious Education

Religious Education is taught as part of the core curriculum at Priory School. The Mission Statement of the school in which we aim to be a ‘thriving Catholic Independent School which welcomes children of all faiths’ is reflected in the department's aim of helping pupils recognise the religious and spiritual dimensions of life.

Within Religious Education lessons pupils are taught the same universal message of love and concern for others, while at the same time being encouraged to bear witness to this message in all areas of their school life through the channels of their faith, to reflect upon their own values and beliefs, and respect the faith of others.

Religious Education is a member of the Humanities faculty. The aim of the Humanities faculty is to develop student’s understanding  of the world in which they live and we hope that our students learn to appreciate that they are part of a local, national and global community and that their part in it matters. In humanities we expect students to have open and enquiring minds and to show a willingness and eagerness to find out more about their pasts, beliefs and environments.

The department has consistently achieved very good GCSE results with 100% A*-C in 2009.

History

"Not to know what took place before you were born

is to remain forever a child"
Cicero

We believe history is a vital subject for all students of all faiths. History has a unique role to play within the National Curriculum and Priory School. Our ambition is to allow our students to access the curriculum at an appropriate level and to gain an understanding of a variety of relevant and exciting topics. Students use critical thinking to foster enquiring and creative minds. They will develop analytical skills, giving them the ability to make judgements, give rational explanations and become independent and reflective learners.

The Department prides itself on making the subject come alive outside the classroom.  There have been almost 30 study visits outside the department in ther last 3 years.  We are also proud of our excellent examination results

In 2007 we achieved 100% A* - C at GCSE and in 2008 50% A*-A.

This year students can look forward to the following busy schedule :-

The Roman Baths

The Black Country Museum

Selly Manor

Merseyside Maritime Museum

The Beatles Story

Kenilworth Castle

GCSE Revision Conferences

The American West Museum

A trip to Auschwitz

Leeds Thackeray Medical Museum

Geography

Geography aims to bring the outside world into the classroom. People & places shape our everyday lives and we live in a world of ever increasing connections and interactions. The department gives insight and understanding about the world. We want to see students who value their role and responsibility for environmental sustainability and who can give explanations for some of the big questions such as "Why did the Asian Tsunami in 2004 kill so many people?" and "Is global warming anything to do with me?"

Geography provides an exciting and varied curriculum. The range of topics offered covers the more traditional aspects of Geography as well as contemporary topics such as Geography of Crime and Geography in the news. Pupils carry out a range of geographical enquiries inside and outside the classroom. The department is well resourced and incorporates the use of ICT into its schemes of work

Business Studies
As countries become more globalised business faces more competition from all areas. This competition affects students directly where jobs are concerned.

Most of the students will work for a business in some capacity and may even go on to open their own business. In Business Studies we aim to ensure that the students obtain an in-depth knowledge of the working of business through investigations of current events. Students are encouraged to set up mini-enterprises in order to make the practical links with the theory. The subject can be taken at GCSE or started for the first time at A level. Economics may also be offered as an A level option.
