Maths

Mathematics is essential to modern day living in a variety of ways. Every time we open a newspaper or watch the television we are bombarded with information, often presented mathematically. We aim to ensure that students can use Mathematics to its fullest extent, to further their progress in other subjects, but principally to enjoy themselves.

At Key Stage 3 we follow the National Numeracy Strategy in order to prepare pupils for beginning their GCSE course in Year 9. At Key Stage 4 we follow the National Curriculum as presented by the Edexcel GCSE syllabus leading to the examination at the appropriate level.

Small class sizes mean pupils receive individual attention in Mathematics.
ICT

As a result of the school ICT initiative and the establishment of dedicated Preparatory and Sixth Form computer suites, senior ICT studies entered an exciting time. The pupils study the new popular OCR Nationals Level 2 which can award up to four GCSEs. This builds on the Complete ICT course followed in Key Stage 3 and Preparatory ICT lessons.

The updated senior ICT suite has 20 new computer stations and, therefore, can accommodate the largest senior classes and is well used by all subjects. It boasts interactive projection, video and audio capture and a surround-sound system for multimedia applications.

Science
Science is dynamic and practical. Small group sizes enable us to work closely with all students working to their ability. With computer interactive projectors and audiovisual in our laboratories, we can bring difficult science concepts to life. The Sciences are taught by subject specialists in designated laboratories.

Preparatory and Senior Science are closely co-ordinated and follow the National Curriculum. Senior pupils progress is assessed using national tests and this prepares them for the external examinations. The new GCSE courses allow us to continue to tailor to the needs of the individual as Sciences are popular choices at sixth form.

Technology

The Design & Technology department aims to provide a creative environment where pupils are encouraged to analyse, design, produce and evaluate solutions that meet the needs of a target audience.

We encourage pupils to think for themselves and care for the environment in which they live. At Key Stage 3 the curriculum has recently been enhanced to include resistant materials, electronics, systems & control, alongside food and textiles, whilst all pupils will be made aware of the design process and graphical representation including Computer Aided Design. All of these activities take place in our newly equipped Design and Technology Centre.

Food Technology

Food Technology is an integral part of Design and Technology and as such follows the National Curriculum Strategy at KS3. At KS4 the students are presently following the OCR Design and Technology – Food Technology syllabus.

Food and food related issues are important dimensions in most people’s lives. At Priory we aim to help students to engage with food and cooking in a positive and encouraging way. Students arriving in year 7, do so with very varied experiences of food and cooking. Our aim is to build on these, through fostering an enquiring and creative atmosphere in which to learn. Working individually, with a partner or as a team member pupils explore and make dishes that meet the needs of individuals. They are encouraged to consider the spiritual, ethical and environmental issues relating to food.

Child Development

Throughout the GCSE course, students develop knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to the roles and responsibilities of the family, through conception, pregnancy, birth and the stages of a child’s development.

Visiting speakers, first time mothers, and midwives are just part of the experience that helps to broaden the knowledge and understanding of the students. The course is further enhanced through links with Priory Poppets.
