Year 5 trip to the Black Country Museum

On Thursday 20th November, year 5 took a trip to the Black Country museum. The children have been learning about the Victorians and how life was different for children living then compared to now. The children were interested and well- behaved, in fact the staff at the museum congratulated year 5 on both their knowledge and their behaviour.  We had a thoroughly enjoyable day out and we learnt a lot. The children have written about the things that they learnt.

Canals:

The canal was interesting because most people used to make a living out of going up and down a canal.  To pull the boat, they used a horse but the horse grew tired very easily so they invented an engine to move the boat instead.

Lunch:

At first we had to sit outside to have our lunch, but as more people left we were able to move to a nice warm canteen.

Mines:

When we went into the mine, it was dark and we had to use a torch. Our tour guide was very funny and I loved going into the mine. We couldn’t take pictures in there though, which was a bit disappointing.

Chemist:

We visited a real chemist from a village called, Netherton. In every chemist, they have carboys which represent the earth’s elements: Fire, earth, water and air. This enabled people who couldn’t read the sign saying ‘Chemist’ to know that they were one. They used different shaped bottles, some with ridges to enable blind people to know that the bottle contained medicine.

School:

When we went to the Black Country museum, we experienced what school was like for Victorian children.  We had to write on slates and we learnt how to write using ‘hooks and hangers’. We had to call the teacher ‘Ma’aam’. You were told off if you were fidgeting, slouching or looked tired.

The school was called St James’s school and the teacher explained the rules to us when we entered the school. She had eyes like an eagle and she suddenly spotted Keanu slouching so she called him up to the front.  When the teacher caught Taneal, Philippa and Ellie talking she called them up the front and threatened them with the cane!
