Learning Enrichment Centre
Ensuring every child succeeds

Your questions answered

Why was the Learning Enrichment Centre created?

At Priory School we are committed to ensuring success for every child in our care whatever their ability.   We believe passionately that each pupil has their own special gifts and that our role as educators is to nurture and develop these talents.

The Learning Enrichment Centre was created to meet the needs of children with speech and language challenges such as dyslexia.  The specialist support it provides unlocks the door to academic success for children who face such challenges.

Who can it help?

The Learning Enrichment Centre provides specialist support for pupils with a wide range of learning difficulties including dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia and communication difficulties.

The most common speech and language challenge faced by children at the school is dyslexia.  About 10% of the population have some form of dyslexia. About 4% are severely dyslexic, including some 375,000 schoolchildren.

What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia causes difficulties in learning to read, write and spell.  Short-term memory, mathematics, concentration, personal organisation and sequencing may be affected.   Dyslexia is biological in origin and tends to run in families, but environmental factors may also contribute to it.  The effects of dyslexia can largely be overcome by skilled specialist teaching and the use of compensatory strategies.  The earlier the intervention the better the outcome.

How is support provided to pupils?

All pupils are closely monitored in their classrooms and if any specific learning difficulties are identified that require specific support, intervention by the School’s specialist tutor, will be undertaken to ensure pupils learn at an optimum level.  For many this support can take place within the classroom but for others further intervention may be required in small groups in the Learning Enrichment Centre as well as one to one tuition.  As well as the expertise of staff within the school, the Learning Enrichment Centre also benefits from regular visits from teachers from Dyslexia Action who provide further specialist tuition for pupils.
